“Watch your thoughts, they become words. Watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become habits. Watch your habits, they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.” — adapted from the memoirs of Hiram Withington, in The Iron Lady screenplay by Abi Morgan.
So, how do you watch your thoughts? What you see and read can influence your thoughts. The lyrics of songs creep into your thoughts. Who you listen to, and who you choose to believe, can influence your thoughts. So, if you want to succeed, read relevant books, listen to the voices that have been where you want to go, and make sure your close network is filled with like-minded people who share the same goals, rather than just the most popular or most “successful” voices.
But, I also think that if you condemn too much, you might become what you condemn. My study of history shows people – and even nations – who become what they condemn, or what they praise.
I thought The Iron Lady was an incredibly poetic piece of filmmaking, with a talented director, writer, cast, crew, and all the rest, but I’m not sure I want to think about it too much.
